Mental Health Symptoms
After a traumatic event it's normal to experience anxiety or nightmares, and these usually go away within a few weeks. However, some individuals experience lasting psychological problems, resulting in depression and anxiety.
A relatively small percentage will develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Symptoms can include being constantly anxious, being unable to relax, vividly re-experiencing the traumatic event, avoiding triggers that may cause distressing memories or feelings of the event.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and other mental health conditions can lead to problems in relationships at work and at home, increased irritability, anger, depression, panic attacks, and substance misuse, particularly alcohol.
